Puppies need 4 sets of shots to be fully protected from disease. Distemper, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus and Kennel Cough are a few of these disease's that can kill a tiny puppy in a very short period of time.
For this reason, shots are given at approximately 6, 9, 12, and 15 weeks of age. Rabies shots are given at 13 weeks of age. These shots are critical for your puppy, as these shots protect them from life threatening illnesses. We cannot stress this enough! DO NOT take your new puppy into places where other dogs or animals go until they have had all their shots. Other dogs can be carriers of disease even if they are healthy. When visiting your Veterinarian, keep the puppy in your arms. Think of the waiting room like a hospital emergency room. Would you allow your new born to crawl around on the emergency room floor? This also includes, pet stores, parks, etc.
DO NOT TAKE CHANCES WITH YOUR NEW BABY!
Puppies should be dewormed at 2 weeks of age and again at 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks of age. Then it is prudent to put them on a monthly heartworm preventive for life that also protects the dog against other parasites, or at least continue monthly deworming for 6 months.
